At this very place Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami wrote the great Vaisnava
classic Sri Chaitanya
Caritamrita, a
biography on the life and precepts of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This work was
finished in 1581, and just one year later in 1582 Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami
entered samadhi. He is also the author
of the highly aclaimed Govinda-lilamrta which
describes the daily pastimes (astakala-lila)
of Radha and Krishna, as well as a commentary on Bilvamangala Thakura’s Krishna-karnamrita,
known as Saranga-rangada.
He came to Vrndavana on the orders of Lord Nityananda who appeared to him
in a dream. On his arrival at Radha-kunda, he took shelter of Raghunatha dasa
Gosvami, whom he accepted as his guru. The Chaitanya-is based largely on the accounts of Lord Chaitanya’s pastimes in Puri, as
described by Raghunatha dasa who personally witnessed them. Raghunatha would
speak for three hours on Lord Chaitanya’s pastimes every afternoon before an
assembly of devotees, and Kaviraja Gosvami would take notes on whatever
Raghunatha spoke.
